His humor

But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty… 1 Corinthians 1:27 (NKJV)

Does God have a sense of humor? One of the best evidences that He does can be seen in the way He chooses to accomplish His will in this world.

How’s that? God doesn’t do things the way the world would do them. He doesn’t measure the natural abilities and potential of men and women. He doesn’t follow society’s rules for success. Instead, God knowingly, deliberately, and dare we say humorously, does the exact opposite!

Who does He choose to represent Him before the mighty Pharaoh of Egypt? A man who had been dwelling in the desert as a shepherd for forty years! Who does He choose to meet and defeat the invincible Goliath in battle? An errand boy who didn’t even command the respect of his older brothers! Who does He use as a vessel to bring the incarnate Son of God into the world? A young teenage girl who was hardly a blip on the world’s radar. Who does He entrust with the most important message the universe has ever known? A few uneducated fishermen, a tax collector, and an insurrectionist!

You have to admit, there’s more than a hint of humor in all this. It’s as if the Lord is telling humanity, “I know how you think things should be done, how things must be done, but wait until you see this! Wait until you see what I’m going to do!”

Humans, in their natural and unspiritual state, will always place a premium on prestige, pedigree, and privilege. “But God” takes all of that and turns it on its ear. He chooses the foolish things to shame the wise, and the weak things to overthrow the mighty. He does things so differently, and we can’t help but hear the faint ripples of heavenly laughter.

Think About It…
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
