Commentary: The Future of the Traditional Church 1
Tuesday, February 09, 2010
It's not enough just to acknowledge change in the culture. One must also consider the increasing rate of change. It impacts every facet of life, including the life of a church. Ignoring the changing world around it, or chasing the latest perceived fad, can turn a church inside out. This does not say that the church needs to let loose of its Biblical, doctrinal foundations; quite the opposite. Join us today and tomorrow, as featured speaker Jim Shaddix shares a commentary regarding the church in these days of large scale cultural shifts.

While this series has the unique title and theme of rewriting our epitaphs, the actual underlying theme is repentance. And this repentance can come about in the life of an individual, a family, and even an entire church body. As he begins this the last message of the series, teaching pastor Jim Shaddix draws our attention to the personal and inclusive pronouns in the title, "me and us". Why are they significant? Because they beg a better understanding of repentance being a personal undertaking of "me and us", and not merely the someone else's in life.

Assessing...understanding...and properly reacting. Such a large part of parenting is teaching children to properly assess and understand situations, so that they'll choose a correct course of action. It is, and always has been, the way God the Father draws men and women to Himself. As he concludes the message "A New Opportunity - Here and Now", teaching pastor Jim Shaddix stresses the importance of being overtly vigilant to God's activity in every area of our lives.

So! If you were to get an advanced look at your epitaph today, what would it say? Would you be pleased with it, or would you want to change it here in midstream? As we continue this series entitled "Rewriting Our Epitaph", teaching pastor Jim Shaddix begins this next message "A New Opportunity - Here and Now", and uses both Matthew and Malachi to illustrate the awesome way God works in our lives...if and when we are seeking His activity.

On yesterday's program, featured speaker and teacher Jim Shaddix used terms from Isaiah, chapter 40, to make his point for desiring holiness and purity in our lives. "Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low." His point? The holiness and purity we're striving for, can only come about when we remove the things in our lives that shouldn't be there, and refill ourselves with the things that should. Join us today as he explains.

Before moving further into this series, it needs to be said this concept of rewriting your epitaph, is not something that is attributed only to the experience of Alfred Nobel, but instead is a reflection of the grace of God that is talked about in scripture through the gift of repentance. On this edition of Hope For Today, featured speaker Jim Shaddix looks at the 3rd component to acquire when one sets out to rewrite their epitaph; that is, the condition of holiness and purity.

Where is your thinking erroneous concerning the person of Jesus Christ? Last week, teaching pastor Jim Shaddix spoke about a problem amongst some believing Christians, where the same cross of Christ that ushered them into a saving relationship with God, somehow cannot cover the sin areas of their lives today. Join us today here at OnePlace, as Jim continues this corrective message that deals with the proper understanding repentance and of Christ's forgiveness.

If you've been with us the past two days, you know we're talking about making a conscious, mid-stream decision to change direction with sin issues in our lives, also known as repentance. It's important to know that this concept does not only apply to our personal lives, but in our families, and in the corporate aspect of the church as well. Join us again today as teaching pastor Jim Shaddix moves to the second emphasis in rewriting our epitaphs.

There are many things that John the Baptist can be remembered for, but above all was his message of repentance. This repentance is the cornerstone not only for this message series, but also, and more so, the Christian life itself. The first fundamental in the series is one of a new order; the fact that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we're not. Join us here today as teaching pastor Jim Shaddix concludes the first message of this series.

"Every man ought to have the chance to correct his epitaph in midstream, and write a new one." These are the words of the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Peace Prize, upon reading his own obituary in a French newspaper. Obviously, the obit was a mistake, but at the same time, it changed Nobel's life in a profound way. Rewriting our epitaph in mid-stream is exactly the foundational thought of this series we begin today, "Rewriting Our Epitaph". Join us over the next 10 broadcast days, as featured speaker Jim Shaddix brings five unique aspects to "rewriting our own epitaphs" by living the Christian life every day with a renewed and repentant heart.

Embracing Our Mission Part 2
1/26/2010 - Tuesday
Like it or not, most of us in the western world are part of culture that puts us in the center of our own world. It's really part of our nature. The giving of ourselves, in any way, to the greater cause of Christ, does not come easily, and for some, is a real battle. On this the final portion of our study in Haggai, featured speaker Jim Shaddix resumes his look at the scriptural affirmations that tell us that this Christ-life, this mission, really is worth it.

Embracing Our Mission Part 1
1/25/2010 - Monday
Have ever awakened, or maybe paused throughout your day, or maybe before you put your head on your pillow at night, and had the thought, "I want to give myself, and my life to something bigger than me!"? If so, why? Why not take up Madison Avenue and "go for the gusto"? Why not put ME first? As he takes up the last message in this series from the book of Haggai, teaching pastor Jim Shaddix answers the whys of this narrative with three incredible affirmations to us all. Join us today here on OnePlace as Jim teaches.

Pursuing Our Holiness Part 2
1/22/2010 - Friday
On yesterday's program, featured speaker Jim Shaddix brought an interesting perspective to our attention. "Impurity is more pervasive, and is more easily contracted than purity." Today's text under consideration speaks of the pursuit of holiness. Today, Jim confirms that this continues to be the goal of believers everywhere. But he also points out that there can sometimes be an abuse of God's grace in the process. Join us today as he explains.

Pursuing Our Holiness Part 1
1/21/2010 - Thursday
Paraphrasing our journey in Haggai so far, God used the prophet to re-motivate the people into rebuilding the temple. And if that wasn't enough, He then reminded the people of their continuing need to pursue personal holiness as they pursued Him. On this edition of Hope For Today, Pastor Jim Shaddix extends this requirement to our day. Join us as Jim considers a very challenging principle. Simply stated, it says that impurity is more pervasive, and is more easily contracted than purity.

Anticipating Our Future Part 6
1/20/2010 - Wednesday
We've spent several days in this message. Using the people of Haggai's time, the intent was to understand the warping or distortion that can occur when we apply historical experiences or mindsets to our present day lives. Ultimately, this impacts our future experiences as well, especially when it comes to the way we experience God in our lives. Join us today as our teaching pastor concludes his message "Anticipating Our Future".

Anticipating Our Future Part 5
1/19/2010 - Tuesday
The primary theme of this series is God's presence among His people. Up until this point, we've been examining the prophet Haggai's entreaty to the children of Israel, to understand the connection between the incomplete temple, and the lack of God's presence. We then looked at the proper mindsets for our day in pursuing God's presence; to be strong, to work hard for His glory, and not to live in fear. Today, featured speaker Jim Shaddix turns to the future tense as he encourages us to expect the effects of God's presence.

On our program today, we pick up from last Friday's topic of attempting to live in the present, by applying the right or wrong mindsets of the past. The end result is our developing a warped view of God, and then experiencing His presence to a lesser degree or with a lesser regularity. Join us here on Hope For Today, as teaching pastor Jim Shaddix suggests several ways to keep our focus and emphasis where it needs to be.

Earlier in the week, we talked about the problem of applying the mindsets of the past to the future; both as individuals, and corporately as the church. Join us on this edition of Hope For Today, as featured speaker Jim Shaddix reminds us that the best way to see or anticipate our future is to see it through the lens of God's agenda for us.

Anticipating Our Future Part 2
1/14/2010 - Thursday
On Hope For Today, featured speaker Pastor Jim Shaddix examines the pitfalls that occur when westernized, Madison Avenue type thinking creeps into the church. "Bigger is better, more rather than less, grander is better than mundane." Like oil and water that do not mix, these mindsets are destructive in the church environment, for the simple reason that they take our focus off the presence of God. Join us today as Jim explains.

Anticipating Our Future Part 1
1/13/2010 - Wednesday
On this edition of Hope For Today, teaching pastor Jim Shaddix once again refers to the book of Haggai, in order to shed light on an age old problem in human nature; living in the past. It's a problem in individual lives. It's a problem in the life of a church. Join us today, as Jim looks at how applying past successes to what appears to be the less than stellar present can warp our focus on God, and stifle His presence among us both as individuals, and corporately as the church.

Giving Our Best Part 8
1/12/2010 - Tuesday
We're asking the questions, "How do we do this? How do we pursue God's presence to the greatest degree, with the greatest frequency?" As he concludes this message "Giving Our Best", featured speaker Jim Shaddix refers to the New Testament to answer this question poised in the book of Haggai. The bottom line answer? Get off the fence, and pursue Him and His mission with everything we've got.
