The worship wars are over, and most protestant churches now feature a praise band or worship team. In the quest for relevance, today's churches offer worship experiences that are in tune with the expectations that parishioners receive from contemporary pop-culture. However, some are beginning to recognize that this pop-music worship style lacks a certain transcendence, and in their quest to find a sense of the sacred, many are abandoning evangelicalism and are heading to Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. Is it possible that we have left Christ out of Christianity? Is the faith and practice of American Christians today more American than Christian? These are the provocative questions Michael Horton addresses in this thoughtful, insightful book. He argues that while we invoke the name of Christ, too often Christ and the Christ-centered gospel are pushed aside. The result is a message and a faith that are, in Horton's words, "trivial, sentimental, affirming, and irrelevant." This alternative "gospel" is a message of moralism, personal comfort, self-help, self-improvement, and individualistic religion. It trivializes God, making Him a means to our selfish ends. Abandoning Evangelicalism?

There are many reasons why people leave evangelical churches. Sometimes it has to do with lack of transcendence, mystery, or beauty. Others find a lack of seriousness and depth. Failing to receive any shepherding or discipleship with individual attention and care, they realize their experience at church is sort of like watching TV. This was the primary reason for my own abandonment of an evangelical megachurch. And, unfortunately, many who give up on their church eventually end up abandoning Christianity altogether, as was the case of my own mother many decades ago.

Michael S. Horton is the main host of the White Horse Inn radio broadcast. He is Professor of Apologetics and Theology at Westminster Seminary California and editor-in-chief of Modern Reformation magazine. He received his M.A. from Westminter Seminary California, his Ph.D. from Wycliff Hall, Oxford and the University of Coventry, and also completed a Research Fellowship at Yale University Divinity School. He is currently a member of the Oxford University Union Society, the Royal Institute of Philosophy, the American Academy of Religion, the American Theological Society, and the Calvin Studies Society.

Dr. Horton is the author of more than seventeen books, including Putting Amazing Back Into Grace, A Better Way: Rediscovering the Drama of God-Centered Worship, The Law of Perfect Freedom, Made In America, Where In The World Is The Church, Covenant & Eschatology, Lord and Servant, and many others. Dr. Horton is a minister in the United Reformed Churches of North America and currently resides with his wife and four children in Escondido, California.
