"Only fear the Lord and serve Him in truth with all your heart."
I Samuel 12: 24, King James Version

EXPLORATION:

"Serve Him With All Your Heart"

"We should always approach God knowing that we do not know Him. We must approach the unsearchable, mysterious God who reveals Himself as He chooses; whenever we come to Him, we are before a God we do not yet know."
Anthony Bloom

How do I serve a Father I don't know?

How can I understand my Father better?

INSPIRATION:

"Lord, teach me to seek You, and reveal Yourself to me as I look for You.  For I cannot seek You unless first You teach me, nor find You unless first You reveal Yourself to me."
St. Ambrose
(340-397)

As Samuel ended his liturgy to the children of Israel regarding the God he had grown to love and adore, he encouraged these willful people to serve God with all their hearts.  But sometimes, it is difficult for us as earthly humans to serve a God who seems so far away and sometimes distant.  As much as we try to connect with our Father in heaven, there is a mysterious quality about Him which sometimes seems to block me from being as close to my Father as I long to be.

This is why, for the next three days we are going to explore some of the facets of our Father that will help us, not only understand Him better, but also assist us as we watch and study about His dealings with Saul, David,  Solomon and the women whose lives intertwined with theirs.

In the Psalms, David sang these words to his heavenly Father, "As a deer longs for flowing streams, so longs my soul for You, O Lord" (Psalm 42: 1).  I can relate to the thought David expresses for I, too, have longed, many times, to know more about God - to have a clearer understanding of not only who He is but also the character He embodies.

I believe, all of us, have within us, a desire to not just know about God but to really know Him.   We desire to have a clearer picture of who He is.  In Exodus 33, Moses, when on Mount Sinai and in communion with God, made this request: "Shew me now Thy way, that I may know Thee…I beseech Thee, shew me Thy glory" (Exodus 33: 13, 18, K.J.V.).  Moses, whose relationship with God was one of the closest recorded in Scripture, longed to know more…to understand more…to be surrounded by more of God.

It is this longing, to understand more fully the "mystery of God," that we will be exploring over the next few days.  The Greek Christian preacher, John Chrysostom wrote that, "A comprehended God is no God."  And while you and I, with our limited understanding, will never clearly comprehend the greatness and all the vastness of God, we have been promised that if we "draw nigh to God, He will draw nigh to us" (James 4:8). Further, our God invites us to "come reason together" with Him.  Obviously, God wants us to gain a better understanding of who He is, and this is what we will do as we seek to better understand God who is our Father, our Mother, our Lover, our Friend, and our Savior.

As we "draw nigh" to the King of the Universe may these words by Christina Rossetti be ours:

"Lord, purge our eyes to see
            Within the seed a tree,
Within the glowing egg a bird,
            Within the shroud a butterfly.
Till, taught by such we see
            Beyond all creatures, Thee
And hearken to Thy tender word
And hear its, "Fear not: it is I."

AFFIRMATIONS:

            "Deep
            is where it is dark
            where there is mystery
where the way is not known
where it is easy to become fearful
            and even turn back.

            but
            Deep
            within your heart,
            God,
            is where
there's always strength to go in
            where truth becomes known
where your love holds me close
where I need not be afraid.

            my hidden self,
            Deep, Deep down
            in the womb of Yourself:
            safe
            nourished
            guarded
            enlivened.

            take me there, God.
            I want to go."
