Why not begin the new year by involving the Lord in the process? He has a dream for your life, and by involving Him in the equation, you will be closer to fulfilling that dream.
God has sent us an invitation with an R. S. V. P. on it. We gather on Christmas morning and open presents, gather with family and friends for a special meal, and perhaps even go to a church service on Christmas Eve. But regardless of all our activities, each of us will accept or reject the invitation from God which Christmas offers.
There is nothing wrong with ambition, nothing wrong with wanting to improve one’s lot in life, and nothing wrong with seeking after more, but not at the detriment of counting the blessings of God in your life.
The Lord God gave a promise to King Solomon that He would respond to the faithful prayers and genuine repentance of His people. Time and time again the people of God have drifted from the purposes of God and have found their nation in tremendous need. When a nation turns away from the Lord, the Lord withdraws His very Presence, and the people are “turned over” to the very evil they desire (See Romans 1) inheriting the consequences of such evil. It is as if God says to the nation: “So you don’t want me around, ok. I will withdraw from the affairs of your nation.”
A parishioner asked me recently what he had to do to keep his relationship with the Lord going strong. I asked him a few questions about what he meant, and then I gave him a 3-point answer.
The early followers of Jesus had seen Him arrested and then killed by the Roman government with the gruesome act of crucifixion. Some of them had helped put Him in a burial tomb nearby. They knew He was dead. The morning after the Sabbath (Saturday), some of the women went to the tomb in order properly prepare His body for burial. To their utter surprise and shock, He was not there.
There is a difference between knowing about God and knowing God. I can know my Bible. I can know all the historical and theological declarations about God. I can know the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed. I can go to church regularly and attend Bible Studies and Sunday School. I can learn and learn and learn. But there is a difference between knowing about God and knowing God.
As we begin another year, I would like to invite you to consider your health. I would like to invite you take an honest look at your choices and decisions and how they are affecting your lifestyle. The decisions we make each day regarding our health is a very spiritual issue.

I want to invite you to renew your spiritual life by taking on the discipline of FASTING. There is not much discussion about this Biblical and historical personal discipline in the modern Church, but it is a necessity for going deeper in the spiritual life and creating a listening ear to what God might be saying.
All of this uncertainty and lack of confidence in the economy, in our politicians, and in the future can have a huge affect on one’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Have you found yourself being more pessimistic? Have you found yourself more discouraged and depressed? How you found that you have lost your joy and zest for life? If so, this is not what God desires for you.
Fear is one of our God-given emotions to cause us to be alert, to warn us that danger is lurking, and to prepare us to act. But fear can paralyze us and can bring on anxiety, worry, and all kind of physical effects in our body. Fear is to be a guide, not the controller of our being.
With an honest look at history, one cannot ignore the Judeo-Christian foundation on which our country was built and has flourished. The historical documents and the writings on our national monuments present a clear picture of a country which included a reverence and respect for God in its public life.
When a nation turns away from the Lord, the Lord withdraws His very Presence, and the people are "turned over" to the very evil they desire, inheriting the consequences of such evil. when God is not present, not only is His divine protection removed, but His wisdom, counsel, guidance, and blessing evaporate. Evil prevails. Injustice rules. Wisdom and wise counsel are no where to be found. The innocent suffer.

If your prayer life is like most people, there are times when you have trouble praying. It seems like you are praying to the ceiling or that you just cannot connect with the Lord. Yes, we can pray at anytime and in any place, but sometimes we run into trouble in our prayers because we are not prepared.
Who are the undesirables in your world? Who are the people that your religious leaders are saying it is wrong to hang out with? Could it be that you are missing the Shepherd’s Heart? Could it be that you are in contradiction to the desires of our Lord?
Many times in our journey following the Lord, we are called to wait – wait for directions, wait for counsel, wait for answered prayer. Since we Americans have a difficult time waiting, too often we don’t wait for Him, and we get ourselves in a mess.
For many people more activities and people’s schedules get jammed and overflowing with personal obligations. Oftentimes, when this occurs, a person’s devotional times get squeezed out of their daily schedule, and soon their relationship with the Lord becomes distance. Having a daily time alone with God is vital to keeping a strong, vibrant, relationship with the Lord.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. Jesus spoke much about Him in his teachings to his followers. He said that the Spirit would come as a “counselor” to those who know Him (John 14:15). Jesus said that when he left the earth that He and the Father would come to the believer and make their home within the believer (John 14:23). He says the Spirit will come to the believer and convict of sin, lead her or him to truth, speak the Father’s Word, and bring glory to Jesus (John 16:7f). Yet…. Why do so many modern day followers of Jesus not have the Holy Spirit in their lives?

Temptations come to all of us who are following the Lord and seeking to do His will in our lives. These can serve to strengthen our walk with the Lord or they can serve to encourage our wandering from the ways of God in our lives. Temptations usually appeal to our desires and addictions which are outside of the will of God for our lives.
Pentecost is not just some historical remembrance and celebration like the 4th of July. It is a time when the Church challenges its members to be filled with the Holy Spirit, the promised gift to the believer (John 14:15; John 16:7f).

In life, anything of worth comes with a struggle. The spiritual life is not immune to this principle. Temptations and struggle should not to be feared. So how are we to battle temptations in our lives?
