"And may he be to you (Naomi), a supporter in your old age."
Ruth 4:15
Amplified Bible

EXPLORATION:

"Celebration-Time"

The Supporter

"Supporter" - To carry the weight of especially from below.  To be able to help bear and withstand.  To assist another.  One who promotes or advocates for another.  Provides relief or succor in times of distress.

Is there someone in my life who has been my "supporter?"

How has my heavenly Father provided "succor" to me during times of distress?

"Would you like me to tell you what supported me through all the years?  It was this, ‘Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.' On these words I staked everything, and they never failed."

David Livingstone

INSPIRATION:

"Fly humbly when you fly; and walk when you can."
Author Unknown

I never in my life imagined a day would come when I wouldn't be able to walk without the support of something or someone.  But after the accident that so suddenly turned Jim's life and mine upside down, I find there are days when getting around isn't as easy as it once was.  After one particularly upsetting incident, I told my doctor I didn't like the idea of using a "walker," but I had to, just to make it from the kitchen to our bedroom.  "Well," she observed, "Did you get there without hurting yourself?"

"Yes," I answered.

"Then I'd say you should be thankful to have proper equipment that supports you when you face a rough day," my physician replied.

As Naomi's friends looked at the precious grandson who had come into her family, they asked that this blessed child would bring new life into Naomi's world and this child would be a nourisher to Naomi, one who would feed her entire life - physically, emotionally and spiritually - with heaven's nutrients.  And then these women asked that as time slipped by, this precious child would be a "supporter" to Naomi in her aging years.

Just like the times in the last few years when I realized I needed some type of support or assistance or aid - Naomi's friends knew a time would come in her life when she would need a shoulder to lean on or a hand to hold.  And these kind friends asked that Obed understand the "succour" he could provide to Naomi as time went by.

When I looked up the word support in the Bible, I was led to one of the most comforting passages in the Bible, found in Hebrews 2: 18. "For in that He (Jesus) Himself hath suffered being tempted, He is able to succour them that are tempted."  This is how the verse reads in the King James Version of the Bible.  But I want to share with you the way the Amplified Bible translates this text for it expands my viewpoint of the word "support" which means "succour."  "Because He (Jesus) Himself, in His humanity, has suffered in being tested and tried, He is able immediately to run to our cry to assist and relieve those who are being tested and tried and who therefore are being exposed to suffering."  This last phrase reads this way in The Message Bible: "Jesus would be able to help where help was needed." (Hebrews 2: 18).

What an enlightening visual picture is painted for us as we read about Naomi's friends who asked God to let Naomi receive the blessed support of one who would walk by her, lift her up and sustain her as the years went by.

Just like the "walker" I sometimes use to get around, so Obed would be the supporter Naomi needed at just the right time.

And this is the "succour" or assistance you and I can trust on every day of our lives.  A supporter who has faced all the pain and suffering that has plagued our lives and knows exactly the moment we need His loving arms to support us and hold us up and give us strength.  In the words of Isaiah, "Even to your old age I am He, and even to hair white with age will I carry you. I have made, and I will bear!" Isaiah 46: 4, Amplified Bible).

"O God within my breast,

Almightly, ever-present Deity!

Life-that in me has rest,

As I - undying life—have

power in Thee!"

Emily Bronte

AFFIRMATION:

"God of all women,
maidens and mothers,
widows and wives,
look with favor on us all.
May all who are insecure
and anxious feel themselves set free.
As we grow in age,
may we also grow
in wisdom and grace
and the gracious art of
learning to let go, to accept
support and the gentleness
of helping hands.
Old and young together,
ordinary women together,
growing stronger in an
embrace of support and peace."
